About Police and Fire
Every community strives to be safe. Dyersville is no exception. With the professionals in the Police and Fire Department, citizens can know that their needs for safety and security are being taken care of by a committed group of people.
The Police Department is staffed by six full-time officers, three part-time officers, f
our full-time dispatchers, three part-time dispatchers, and two bike officers (college interns) during the summer months.
The Police Department serves as a resource to the community. Their responsibilities include: traffic enforcement, criminal investigations, dispute mediation, accident investigation, crisis intervention, animal calls, school and youth programs, radar and security checks for businesses, gun safety, and community event support. They work with county, state, and federal law enforcement agencies to provide the services that citizens need to live comfortably and safely in Dyersville and the surrounding area.
The Fire Department is completely staffed by volunteers, 40 in all. They are certified as Firefighter 1 through the Iowa Fire Service Training Program. The Dyersville Fire Department is the largest in Dubuque County and has been in existence over 100 years. They cover structural fires, EMS calls, hazardous material spills, grass fires and service calls (carbon monoxide detectors, fire alarms). All members take training weekly on local, state and national levels.
The Fire Department serves residences, businesses and farmsteads in a 66-square mile area. They maintain seven fire apparati (two pumper trucks, two tankers, one r
escue unit, a brush truck, and a personal van). Funding for the Fire Department comes from the City of Dyersville, the Dyersville Community Fire Department (other nearby rural communities) plus the department's own fundraising efforts.
Additionally, emergency medical support comes from the Fire Department through Bi-County Ambulance. The Fire Department has 17 volunteers who are also trained as first responders and are trained to use the vehicle extrication tool owned by the department.
